The North Market has a host of additions and updates to ring in the New Year. We’ve added two new businesses, Candy Shack and Holy Smoke BBQ, and upgraded two more, CaJohn’s CaBoom Chili Co. and Barry’s New York Deli.

Candy Shack • Todd Kitchen and Adrian Moore • 614-365-3000
The Candy Shack has opened at the north end of the Market next to the Fish Guys. It is co-owned by Todd Kitchen and Adrian Moore. The Candy Shack sells an exceptional variety of high quality bulk candies, both wrapped and unwrapped, and they stock a full line of hard-to-find nostalgic candies. Their inventory includes every variety of gummy creature imaginable including the standard gummy bears and Swedish fish. Hard candies stocked include jaw breakers, Jolly Ranchers, Lemonheads, Bottle Caps and a couple dozen more varieties. Old-fashioned candies will have their place too, and you can find everything from lollipops to Tootsie Rolls among the options. They will also stock an interesting assortment of nostalgic and “movie theater” candies ranging from rock candy sticks and wax lips to Snow Caps and Raisinettes. Chocoholics are covered with mini familiar favorites including Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Hershey’s and more. For those who don’t or can’t “do sugar” they will have a small line of sugar-free options with caramels, gummies, chocolates and hard candies too!

Holy Smoke BBQ • Stan Riley • 614-223-0322
Holy Smoke BBQ has opened at the south end of the Market between Heil’s Family Deli and Grapes of Mirth. It is owned by Stan Riley of Yoho’s Catering. The main dishes at Holy Smoke BBQ will include beef brisket, pulled pork, BBQ chicken and ribs by the half and whole slab. Traditional sides will be comprised of Cave Beans (baked beans), Yohos Famous Recipe Cole Slaw and Charleston Cornbread. All menu items will also be sold to go by the pound. Holy Smoke BBQ will share the stall with CaJohn’s CaBoom Chili Co. We believe that it will prove to be quite the sizzling combination.

CaJohn’s CaBoom Chili Co. • John and Sue Hard • 614-223-0322
CaJohn’s CaBoom Chili Co. has moved across the aisle to share space with Holy Smoke BBQ. This allowed for the expansion of the bottled line at CaJohn’s Flavor and Fire which remained in its current location between Bluescreek Farm Meats and Curds & Whey. The salsas, hot sauces, rubs and spice mixes have been doing booming business and needed the extra space. When the opportunity to collaborate with Holy Smoke BBQ presented itself, John and Sue Hard jumped on the chance to enlarge the digs of both Flavor & Fire and the CaBoom Chili Co. The move will allow for an expanded menu that will include Texas chili, chicken chili, a soup of the day, stacked enchiladas, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, smoked sausage, the Devil Dog, a range of nachos and daily specials.

Barry’s New York Deli • Barry Rosenthal • 614-221-6601
Barry’s New York Deli has undergone a dramatic renovation. The updated space is bright with a mustard yellow background and red décor accents with black-and-white checkerboard trim. You would barely recognize the place from the former stall, but the food is just as authentic New York as ever. A complete overhaul resulted in building a new kitchen; there are new counters and fixtures and a “grab and go” case has been added. Overall the menu still includes Barry’s classic items like matzo ball soup, his signature stacked deli sandwiches and his famous reubens. Updates to the menu include a host of salads from a house salad on esclun greens to “The Triborough” which includes tuna, chicken and egg salads on leaf lettuce with gourmet crackers and grapes. Also added to the menu is a variety of Coney Island hot dogs. Junior’s Famous Cheesecake imported from Brooklyn is available by the slice – plain or topped with chocolate, strawberries or raspberries.

Stop by the North Market and check out all of our new possibilities for 2009!
